Hillsdale Surgical Group offers comprehensive digestive health support, from disease prevention to advanced treatment of existing conditions. Digestive health plays an important role in overall wellness. The digestive system—including the esophagus, stomach, intestines, liver, pancreas and gallbladder—works together to break down food, absorb nutrients, and remove waste from the body. When the digestive system functions properly, it helps support energy levels, immune health, and overall well-being. Maintaining digestive health through a balanced diet, regular physical activity, adequate hydration, and preventive screenings can help reduce the risk of common gastrointestinal conditions and support long-term health.

Available Services
Hillsdale Surgical Group provides screening and diagnostic colonoscopy procedures to detect colon cancer, polyps and other gastrointestinal conditions. This is an important preventative screening that can help identify problems early when they are most treatable.
Adults at average risk should begin colorectal cancer screening at age 45, with colonoscopy recommended every 10 years if results are normal until age 75. Ages 76-85 depend on individual and other risk factors. Additional screenings—such as upper endoscopy, liver function tests, and stool-based tests—may be recommended based on symptoms, medical history and individual risk factors. Upper endoscopy screening can be beneficial for those with chronic acid reflux (GERD), difficulty swallowing, unexplained nausea, vomiting, or abdominal pain. Liver function tests are recommended for those with alcohol use, obesity, or diabetes. This is also useful for suspected fatty liver disease or hepatitis. Stool-based tests can be a non-invasive option for low-risk individuals.
An upper endoscopy (EGD) allows providers to examine the esophagus, stomach and upper portion of the small intestine. This procedure helps diagnose ulcers, inflammation, bleeding and other abnormalities within the upper digestive tract.
Our physician assistant can coordinate comprehensive care for patients with liver conditions, including hepatitis, fatty liver disease, cirrhosis and other liver disorders. Treatment plans may include lifestyle changes, medications and ongoing monitoring.
Patients with Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis receive personalized care designed to manage symptoms, control inflammation and improve quality of life. Treatment options may include medications, nutrition support, and coordination with other specialists when needed. Hillsdale Hospital’s Center for Infusion Care offers treatments for inflammatory bowel diseases, and your provider may recommend infusion care as part of your treatment plan. The infusion center can be found on the ground floor of the hospital. Call (517) 212-4336 to learn more about infusions or to schedule an appointment ordered by a provider.
Hillsdale Surgical Group offers preventative screenings to promote early detection of colorectal cancer and other digestive diseases. Our providers assess individual risk factors and recommend appropriate screening tests and intervals.
Diet and lifestyle play a significant role in digestive health. Our team provides personalized guidance on nutrition, dietary modifications and lifestyle strategies that may help reduce symptoms and support overall gastrointestinal wellness. At your GI appointment, your provider will review a broad nutritional plan that is tailored to your specific diagnosis. If there is additional need for nutritional counseling, Hillsdale Hospital offers nutritional counseling with our dietitian, Denise Lovinger.
