Hillsdale Hospital Awarding Up to $50,000 in Educational Support to High School Seniors Pursuing Nursing Careers

Hospital names nursing scholarship after long-time employee

Hillsdale Hospital today announced that applications are now open for the 2026 Doris Whorley Nursing Scholarship program. High school seniors are eligible to apply for tuition assistance of up to $10,000 per year for up to five years for an associate degree in nursing (ADN) or a bachelor of science in nursing (BSN).

The hospital is naming the former Future of Nursing scholarship after long-time employee Doris Whorley, RN, director of risk management and recipients rights advisor. Over her 57 years at Hillsdale Hospital, Whorley has served in various roles including emergency nurse, director of nursing, patient advocate and more. Her plan to retire in 2026 prompted the hospital to rename the scholarship in her honor.

“Doris has the longest-standing record of employment at Hillsdale Hospital, and her legacy is unmatched,” said Jeremiah J. Hodshire, president and chief executive officer. “She has made an incredible impact on hundreds of colleagues, patients and community members over her years here. We cannot say thank you enough to Doris for her devotion to Hillsdale Hospital.”

Students interested in applying for the Doris Whorley Nursing Scholarship can submit applications online at hillsdalehospital.com/education. Applications must include the completed application form, letters of recommendation, two essays addressing the student’s educational and career goals, and a high school transcript. The deadline for submission is Wednesday, April 1 at 4 p.m.

“Our hospital depends on nurses across every point of care, and our mission with this scholarship program is to support their education, on-the-job training and long-term career development,” said Randy Holland, chief nursing and infection control officer. “Doris Whorley has made such an incredible and enduring impact on our hospital’s staff and patients. On behalf of Hillsdale Hospital’s nursing staff, we are honored to carry her legacy forward as we train and guide future nurses.”

Selected applicants will participate in an interview and awardees will be announced in May.
