Two Local Students Awarded Hillsdale Hospital’s Doris Whorley Nursing Scholarship

Hanover-Horton and Will Carleton Academy students receive financial aid for nursing school

Hillsdale Hospital is pleased to announce its 2026 Doris Whorley Nursing Scholarship recipients, Madelyn Jordon of Horton and Icelyn Trumble of Hillsdale. The scholarship awards up to $10,000 per year for up to five years for an associate degree in nursing (ADN) or a bachelor of science in nursing (BSN). Upon completion of their nursing degrees, scholarship recipients commit to working at Hillsdale Hospital.

“I am beyond humbled and honored to have this scholarship named after me,” said Doris Whorley, director of risk management and recipient rights advisor. “Working at Hillsdale Hospital has been one of my greatest blessings. Working in a big hospital can sound exciting, but nothing compares to our small rural hospital in Hillsdale. You will run into your patients at the grocery store and they will remember you and the compassionate care you provided. This surely is one decision you will not regret and I am so excited for Madelyn and Icelyn.”

At Hanover-Horton High School, Jordon earned athletic recognition and served as captain of her volleyball team. She held several positions on student council, including class representative and student board vice president. Jordon was a member of the National Honor Society and earned the citizenship award at her high school. Outside of school, she was an active member of her church’s youth group. Jordon plans to attend Spring Arbor University in the fall to earn her nursing degree.

“Ever since I was a young girl, my dream has been to grow up and work in healthcare,” Jordon said. “Healthcare is more to me than just a job. It’s a way that I can serve others, make a difference in people’s lives, and support my patients in a time that is so scary and difficult. I want to be like the nurses that made a difference in my life.”

At Will Carleton Academy, Trumble played varsity volleyball and varsity soccer, earning athletic recognition for both sports. She served as senior class representative in student council, and earned high honor roll throughout high school and a place on the dean’s list in her college classes. As a first-generation college student, Trumble is currently studying for her Associate of Applied Science in Nursing at Jackson College.

“I have worked hard to stay focused on my education while balancing the responsibilities that come with nursing school,” Trumble said. “Knowing that a respected, rural community hospital values and supports future nurses is motivating. It reminds me that the hard work I am putting into my education has a purpose beyond myself.”

“Madelyn and Icelyn have prepared themselves well for this opportunity as they both are certified nursing assistants currently working in the healthcare field,” said Stacy Feltz, chief administrative officer. “They have demonstrated their passion for serving others already and I am confident they will make a difference in the lives of our patients and our community.”
