“I couldn’t imagine where I’d be at if I didn’t get the surgery.” Megan’s Lumbar Disc Replacement Story

Megan’s back pain was severe for 15 years, but when she threw her back out in 2020, the pain became unbearable.

“It got to the point where just to get in the car, I had to pick my legs up and move them,” Megan recalled. “Some days I would just sit in the car for 30 minutes and wait. I was miserable, to put it lightly. I couldn’t do anything on my own.”

When Megan ran out of nonsurgical options to keep her back pain under control, her provider referred her to Dr. Amritraj Loganathan, neurosurgeon at Hillsdale Spine Center. Megan knew she was in good hands from her first appointment.

“He told me what he could do for me and how he thought it would work.” Megan said. “I had a lot of trust in that.”

Based on Megan’s medical history and spine health, Dr. Loganathan recommended a lumbar disc replacement to relieve her back pain and maintain mobility. “I didn’t really think it was something we did [in Hillsdale],” she explained. “I said, ‘that sounds amazing!’”

Megan was the first Hillsdale Spine Center patient to receive a lumbar disc replacement. Cutting-edge surgical procedures like disc replacements are one of the many treatment methods available at Hillsdale Spine Center to address spine conditions.

“What we want to do here at Hillsdale Hospital is provide services that maybe aren’t being provided in other places,” Dr. Loganathan said. “That makes us a leader in the field of spine care.”

In the weeks leading up to the surgery, Megan felt that she could trust her care team to give her the best possible outcome.

“My number one thought process was: I can’t wait to see how it is when I wake up,” she said.

The procedure on Megan’s spine went better than she could have anticipated, and she woke up with immediate pain relief for the first time in years. “I never needed pain killers when I was [recovering],” Megan recalled. “I couldn’t have asked for a better outcome.”

In the days following her surgery, Megan was amazed at how her quality of life improved, and she returned to work within a few weeks.

“[The procedure] was the best thing I’ve ever done,” she said.
