WHERE: Hillsdale United Brethren Church, 1300 S. Hillsdale Rd.

“There are so many reasons to donate,” Valerie Hepker, clinical nurse manager of emergency services said at Hillsdale Hospital. “Patients with certain diseases need blood transfusions because their condition makes it more difficult for their bodies to generate blood. For others, they may be losing blood because of things like car accidents, traumatic injuries or even giving birth. Blood donors actively help those patients get the care they need.”
Blood is routinely transfused to patients with cancer and other diseases, premature babies, organ transplant recipients and trauma victims, according to the Red Cross. Donors of all blood types are needed, especially those with types O negative, B negative and A negative. Type O negative is the universal blood type that can be safely transfused to anyone, and is often used to treat trauma patients.
