Ferron, a primary care patient at Hillsdale Hospital, recently needed three nodules in her thyroid tested for cancer. Dr. Norris March at Hillsdale Surgical Group performed the biopsy in the surgery’s outpatient clinic.

The procedure involved collecting cells from the thyroid, which is located in the neck, with a small needle. Ferron’s cells would then be checked under a microscope to determine whether the nodule was benign or cancerous. Having undergone the procedure before, Ferron wasn’t looking forward to experiencing it again.
“I don’t like shots in my neck at all,” Ferron said. “It’s very uncomfortable.”
When she arrived at the clinic, the staff noticed her nervousness and took extra care to help her feel as comfortable as possible.
“During the whole procedure, staff encouraged me,” she said. “They did a really good job.”
After the biopsy was completed and Ferron stood up, she began to feel dizzy. Recognizing signs of low blood sugar before Ferron did, the team was ready with a chair and brought her juice and crackers.
“I just started crying because I was so embarrassed,” Ferron said. “I’m sitting here at a doctor’s office, and I’m having this medical issue that I’ve never had before.”
The clinic staff was there for Ferron, empathizing with her and giving her time to recover.
“The receptionist handed me tissues and let me know this is totally normal. They were just so sweet, “Ferron said. “Dr. March came out to check on me too. It was obvious he was trying to care for me without adding to the embarrassment. I appreciated that.”
